Beyond the boundaries of disciplines,
we deeply understand law and society.
Where law and economics meet, the Seoul National University Center for Law & Economics.
Expanding the Foundation of Law and Economics Research
The Seoul National University Center for Law & Economics explores the functioning mechanisms of legal systems and their social effects through research and academic exchange in law and economics. It connects researchers in law and economics with legal professionals, supports research rooted in domestic legal systems, and fosters the development of the next generation of researchers. The changes brought by artificial intelligence and data are primary questions the center investigates in partnership with SAPI.
Law establishes the conditions under which individuals and organizations act, while economics analyzes how these rules affect choices and resource allocations. The center facilitates dialogue between these two disciplines to deepen understanding of legal systems and ensure that research outcomes are shared within academia and society.
Connecting Academia and Practice
It supports understanding and exchange among legal scholars, practicing legal professionals, and economics researchers. Seminars and academic conferences provide venues to compare different methodologies and develop research questions from real-world problems.
Research Rooted in Korean Institutions
The center aims to create an environment for research thoroughly understanding domestic legal systems and to develop into a hub for law and economics research in Asia. Supporting research by early-career and mid-career researchers is also an important role of the center.

Research Program, SAPI
SAPI studies the social changes and legal policy challenges arising from technologies such as AI and XR. It brings together perspectives from technology, economics, the humanities, the social sciences, and law, examining practical problems through collaboration between academics and practitioners. It began as a program of the Center for Law & Economics in 2017, and Professor Yong Lim serves as its director.
It has operated diverse research programs including human rights-based approaches to technology, AI ethics and governance, trustworthy AI standards, and XR policy. Introductions and reports of each project are linked to allow reading of research processes and context.
